Thinking of getting dermal filler in either your face or lips but don’t know where to start or if it’s right for you? Not to worry because many people feel anxious or unsure before trying filler – it is your face, so we totally understand why!

The Best Place to Start if You’ve Never Had Dermal Fillers

That’s why we suggest seeing an experienced practitioner like Dr. Boulos at Dr. Boulos Medical Spa, who can walk you through the process thoroughly, calming any nerves and answering any questions you may have.

If you’re concerned about how fillers will look or have no idea where to start, we’ve got your back and put together some tips in this blog on where those who have never had injections can begin on their filler journey. It all starts with learning your different filler options!

Know the Different Types of Fillers

If you’re wondering what dermal fillers are, they are injectable drugs approved in Canada that help smooth lines and wrinkles or fill out areas like the lips. They are completely different from Botox as the latter “freezes” the troubled spots to smooth out fine lines, whereas fillers fill the area for wrinkle-free skin.

Dermal fillers can be permanent or temporary. The types of filler approved in Canada are hyaluronic acid products, collagen products, autologous fat injections, and other biocompatible materials (aka. polymethylmethacrylate), with hyaluronic acid being the most popular. Any filler made from unnatural products like silicone is banned.

There are over 30 hyaluronic acid dermal fillers for sale in Canada with Juvederm as the most popular. Talk to your specialist during your consultation to see which is right for you.

Start Small

Since most dermal fillers are temporary, it’s best to start small with your treatments. We always recommend first-timers begin with a small amount of product as the changes won’t be too drastic right away; it’s always easier to add more filler than take filler out.

It is possible to dissolve most fillers if you don’t like the results, which puts most at ease. You don’t like how your fillers look? We’ll dissolve it at no extra cost. But, to avoid this, we strongly suggest small amounts, and if you want more during your next session, you’ll have a sense of what you want and what suits your face.

For lip fillers, we suggest starting with half a syringe and for facial fillers, we usually suggest half a syringe per decade of life. For example, if you’re in your 40s, we suggest 2 syringes to start, then go to 1 syringe per decade, which would turn out to be 4 syringes. Again, your specialist can assess your facial needs and suggest the right amount of filler for you.

Build Up Over Time

Starting slow allows you to build up your filler over time. If you have thin lips and want lip filler, you, unfortunately, cannot look like Kylie Jenner in one session; it takes time to build it up. If you start small, you can gradually build up to fuller lips in a natural-looking way. It takes time, but it will be worth it!

Look at Your Face as a Whole

Most people who have never had dermal fillers injected don’t realize that you must look at your face entirely to determine where filler should go and what will look best on you. Commonly, patients will come in wanting under-eye filler but not realize their under eyes are not full because their mid-face is caved in – so filler would need to be injected both under the eyes and in the midface for a completed look. Your specialist should always address your face as a whole when injecting facial fillers.

Find an Experienced Specialist

Doing your research and finding an experienced specialist is essential for receiving your desired results. Dermal fillers should not be a spontaneous decision and should be carefully thought out. Cosmetic procedures are no joke and should always be done by licensed professionals who have the expertise and experience. Make sure to look at reviews and always check if a clinic is reputable. Good luck!
