Juvéderm or Restylane: Which is the Better Filler?

March 30th, 2022

The question often asked the most is, “what is the difference between Juvéderm or Restylane, and which is the better filler out of the two?”

Juvéderm or Restylane: Which is the Better Filler?

Well, there are a lot of components to this answer, so we decided to share them here in this blog post! It’s time to finally get to the bottom of how Juvéderm or Restylane differ, and which is truly the best filler product. The dual of the filler has commenced!

Juvéderm & Restylane

Juvéderm & Restylane are both a family of dermal fillers made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a molecule that naturally forms in the human body to help your skin stay naturally moisturized and silky smooth. Because the main ingredient is produced in our skin naturally, there are little to no risks of complications. Each product can be injected in under 30 minutes with almost no downtime. Both are incredible filler options!

The Major Difference

You’re probably thinking, “then what’s the main difference between the two?” due to their similarities. Well, they are very similar, you’re not wrong about that. The only real difference between the two is their textures. Restylane is more granular, while Juvéderm is smoother. The texture of each is important for their functions, which can be different.

Juvéderm is frequently used to treat fine lines and wrinkles in the tight areas of your face (i.e., smile lines), whereas Restylane stays in place in the skin better and targets sunken areas of the face better. Restylane is also more mouldable, making it the ideal product of the two to use for facial contouring or those looking for a precise result. However, there are no strict rules on which to use specifically for any area or issue. Your practitioner can recommend one over the other for many other factors tailored to your needs.

What are the Results of Each?

Results of both Juvéderm and Restylane vary from person to person, which makes it difficult to determine any specific results. However, our clinic has a good idea of how results work in most patients. When administrated correctly by a qualified practitioner, both products can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, enhance lip size, and restore any lost volume and youthfulness to the face. However, Restylane did come out with a new line last year called Refyne and Defyne, which moves more naturally with the skin tissue and allows better results for problem areas caused by movement of the face.

Which Filler Lasts the Longest?

Most people want fillers that will last longer so they don’t have to get injected too often. However, results can vary from person to person. On average, Restylane lasts about ten months, whereas Juvéderm lasts up to one year. Both choices will require follow-up appointments, and longevity differs as new products come onto the market. For example, the Juvéderm product, Voluma, can last up to two years.

The Verdict

As you can see from this article, both Juvéderm and Restylane are quite similar, and the differences are only subtle. We’d say no which one is superior to the other and what is right for you depends on your goals, needs, and facial structure. An in-office consultation with Dr. Boulos can determine what is right for you. We understand this is not the definitive answer people are looking for, but remember, cosmetic treatments are highly personalized to each client – this is YOUR experience and YOUR enhancement!
